For the first time in its history, the University of Barcelona will compete in the top national category of e-sports, the Spanish League of Legends League ( LES ). The Alma Mater UB team thus joins the elite of professional esports, alongside teams such as Futbol Club Barcelona, Movistar KOI, Team Heretics, and UCAM Esports Club. The league is entering a new phase under the management of Lastlap and Cabal, part of the Atresmedia group, and is integrated into the European competitive system endorsed by Riot Games.

Alma Mater UB is a mixed team made up of five starting players, one substitute, and a coach. The season will kick off in Madrid with an opening tournament taking place from 13 to 15 February, serving as the introduction of the teams and the competition. The first phase of the regular league and the local playoffs will begin in April. The new LES already has a digital presence: it is broadcast on channels such as Twitch, covering league matchdays and competitive activity. The aim is to provide a refreshed and accessible production for League of Legends fans in Spain.

With Alma Mater UB in the first division, the UB not only enters the competitive elite of e-sports but also secures a prominent position in one of the fastest-growing digital industries with the greatest impact among young audiences. This consolidates a project that the UB has developed over recent years as a space for education, research, and community, shaped from a perspective that goes beyond purely competitive performance. The e-sports industry directly influences areas such as digital communication, engineering, data analysis, psychology, education, business, and content creation.

Alongside the UB’s debut in the top competition, the internal UB Alma Mater league continues, with a second edition set to launch this year.
