The generation of new species from holocentric chromosomes
The generation of new species from holocentric chromosomes
In the paper, published in the journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution , the researchers argue that individuals with different cytotypes are able to mate with each other. This makes organisms with holocentric chromosomes model organisms for studying chromosomal evolution and speciation processes. Professor Antonio Marcial Escudero , from the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology of the US , together with two colleagues from the University of Basel (Switzerland), have studied the processes of creation of new species depending on the chromosome types of the original species.

University institutional communication improves the impact and visibility of scientific work and encourages innovation
The main benefits perceived by researchers after participating in an institutional communication campaign of their scientific work are that they increase both the visibility and the impact of the research, improve their prestige and foster innovation. These are some of the conclusions of a doctoral thesis presented at the University of Valencia (UV) by the communicator and scientific journalist Francisco Javier Alonso Flores, who analyses the social impact of institutional communication of R&D&i in Spanish universities.

Researchers determine the complex structure of the receptors related to the addictive effects of opioids
A study published in the journal Pharmacological Research reveals the oligomeric molecular structure of the MOR-Gal1R complex, a component present in the brain which is involved in the analgesic and addictive effects of certain opioids. The study includes the participation of the experts Vicent Casadó, Estefanía Moreno and Verònica Casadó-Anguera, from the Molecular Neuropharmacology Research Group of the Faculty of Biology and the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (I ).

’Black hole guards’ find a dormant Black hole outside our galaxy
A team of international experts, renowned for having debunked several black hole discoveries, identified a stellar-mass black hole in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy near the Milky Way. The discovery is now published in an article on Nature Astronomy , which includes the participation of Mark Gieles, from the Faculty of Physics, the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB (ICCUB) and the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC).

Delaying retirement age increases the risk of mortality for certain groups
An academic study shows how this measure affects the 60-69 age group and mostly harms employees with low-skilled, physically and psychosocially demanding jobs. Researchers, including Sergi Jiménez-Martín, a UPF full professor of Economics, say allowing flexible retirement plans, such as partial retirement, mitigates the negative effect of delaying retirement.

Consumption of extra virgin olive oil during pregnancy increases the level of antioxidants in breast milk and in infants
The consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) —a product with widely known benefits for our health— increases the level of phenolic compounds in breast milk and can cross the placental barrier, reaching the descendant. This has been stated in a study carried out by a team of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences , the UB Institute for Research on Nutrition and Food Safety (INSA-UB ) and the Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition Networking Biomedical Research Centre ( CIBEROBN ).

Team validates a new method for assessing the antimicrobial efficacy of domestic cleaning products
Environmental awareness in society is changing household laundry habits, where the use of less bleach and lower temperatures during washing machine cycles is encouraged. In this context, disinfectants added to detergents have become an essential factor to compensate for these new habits and to prevent the transmission of bacteria, fungi and viruses in the house, as well as to control the level of odour-causing micro-organisms on clothes.

Unprecedented change in Europe’s fire regime
A study reveals an unprecedented change in the fire regime in Europe which is related to climate change. The affected areas are in Southern, Central and Northern Europe but this historical change in Europe's fire regime is more intense in the Mediterranean area. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports , is led by Jofre Carnicer, lecturer of Ecology at the Faculty of Biology, and member of the Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio) of the University of Barcelona and the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF).
