Scientists from the European research project Micro4Biogas have discovered and characterised a new taxonomic order of bacteria which specialise in the decomposition of organic matter and could hold the key to improving biogas fuel production. The order, which they have dubbed Darwinibacteriales, is one of the most abundant in biogas-producing tanks but had never been characterised scientifically before.

Researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and CSIC have studied the effect of lamivudine, a drug used in the treatment of HIV, in a transgenic model of Alzheimer's disease. The results, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences , suggest that retranscriptase inhibitors may be a promising strategy to be developed in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.

Toddlers learn to reason logically before they learn to speak, according to a study by UPF
19-month-old toddlers already use natural logical thinking, even before they learn to speak, to deal with uncertainties about the world. This natural logic contributes to their learning process, both in terms of language and in other fields of knowledge. This is one of the main conclusions of a study led by UPF's Center for Brain and Cognition, that has been published today in the journal Current Biology .

Astronomers from the Universitat de València captured the detailed image of the first radiation belt detected around a brown dwarf outside our solar system. The image, taken last January and now published in the Science journal, evokes the well-known belts of Earth and Jupiter, reveals a magnetic field ten times greater than that of the largest planet in the solar system, and unlocks new secrets of these ultracool substellar objects of very low mass and very powerful radiation.

Deep learning method developed to understand how chronic pain affects each patient’s body
A research team from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), together with University College London in the United Kingdom, has carried out a study to analyse how chronic pain affects each patient's body. Within this framework, a deep learning method has been developed to analyse the biometric data of people with chronic conditions.

Analysing the gender gap in scientific production and performance indicators
Studying the "Matilda effect" in communication-related research 7/28/23 A study by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) reveals the existing gender inequality in the exercise of research careers in communication. This work shows the difficulty female researchers currently have in achieving higher levels of visibility and citations.
