On March 14, 2022, the state of alarm was declared after the COVID-19 pandemic. For the University, this involved the sudden closure of buildings and suspension of all face-to-face academic activities. It was an unusual situation, in which keeping the University of Barcelona running involved extraordinary difficulties. The UB now wishes to publicly acknowledge the effort, dedication and generosity the university community showed during those months of health emergency. The event will take place on May 18, at 12:30 noon in the Paranimph of the Historical Building, and it will be live streamed on UBtv.
Presided over by the rector of the UB, Joan Guārdia, the ceremony will start by remembering the members of the UB community who passed away during the pandemic. Then, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and head of the Department of Epidemiology of Hospital Clínic, Antoni Trilla, will describe the health context we experienced as a result of the pandemic. Afterwards, Joan Elias, rector of the UB when COID-19 reached Catalonia, will recall the institutional response to that emergency situation.
One of the highlights of the ceremony will be the public recognition to the student, TRS and AdSS collectives, and the representative of each group will receive a commemorative plaque. The heads of the Vice-Dean’s Offices of the faculties of the UB will also receive a plaque so that each centre can hang it on their walls. The final part of the program will feature speeches by several institutional representatives. The ceremony will close with a speech by the current rector, Joan Guārdia, who will finish his speech by presenting a symbolic initiative with a handful of seeds from the legendary Ginko biloba, the only tree that survived the Hiroshima bombings, and of which there are two specimens in the Historical Building of the UB.
