Researchers among the most cited worldwide

- ES- EN

The University of Barcelona appears one more year as the leading university in Spain with the most researchers among the most influential worldwide, and it is the second most influential research centre in Spain, following CSIC (Spanish National Research Council). The ranking, published by Clarivate Analytics, identifies the experts who lead the projects with the highest international scientific impact in various areas of study.

Clarivate Analytics’ Highly Cited Researchers -the former intellectual property and science branch of Thomson Reuters- is one of the most prestigious rankings in the international academic and scientific community.

The list includes the world’s 6,938 most relevant names in twenty-two fields of science and social science, ranging from clinical medicine and neuroscience to agriculture, economics and the environment. Out of all these, nearly 3,981 are listed under specific fields, and nearly 3,244 under Cross-Field, a cross-category that identifies authors who have had a substantial influence in several fields over the past decade. Of the 6,938 researchers, 93 work in Spanish institutions.

During the creation of the ranking, the bibliometric experts at Clarivate Analytics analysed the scientific articles that are among the top 1% of the most cited articles by field and year on the Web of Science of Clarivate Analytics. This edition takes into account articles published between 2011 and 2021. This international classification is also a key component of rankings of great global projection in the university world, such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai ranking.
