Female researchers at the University of Valencia publish 12.31% more scientific articles than last year

The University of Valencia (UV) is number 75 in Europe, fourth in Spain and first in the Valencian Community in the 2023 version of the CWTS Leiden Ranking, an international classification that measures the impact and scientific collaboration, open access publication and gender diversity in research. In the classification, in gender indicators, 14,439 articles published by women have been measured, 12.31% more than in 2022.

The data for this ranking is extracted from a ranking of universities selected by the number of publications indexed in Web of Science, for a period of four years. Indicators of scientific impact in Leiden can be calculated using either a complete count method or a fractional one. The first one gives a full weight of one to each publication of a university and the fractional weight of the publications according to the number of collaborators of the institution. This year, the number of institutions has risen to 1,411, up from 1,318 in 2022.

By fields of knowledge, the University of Valencia occupies the first position in Spain in Social Sciences and Humanities both in the complete count and in the fractional count, and it is third in Physical Sciences and Engineering in the second type.

Regarding scientific impact indicators, the UV has climbed to 14,334 published scientific articles, up from 13,029 in 2022. Of these, 301 are in the top 1% of the most cited (36 more than in the previous edition) and 1,770 articles (89 more than in 2022) are among the 10% most cited.

With these data, in the complete count the Valencian institution improves its position in Europe and in the world in number of publications. Thus, on the continent, the UV gains three positions and climbs to position 75, while globally it is placed in position 219, six positions better than in 2022. Regarding the fractional count, the institution also gains three positions in Europe (from position 69 in 2022 to 66 now), and improves the world ranking by 6 (advances from place 248 to 242).

This classification is led internationally by Harvard University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In Europe, the first three ranked are Oxford, London College and Cambridge, while in Spain the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Valencia lead the CWTS Leiden Ranking.
