Species song: new tool for climate change study
Species song: new tool for climate change study
Through the combined use of new technologies, sound recognition algorithms and mathematical models, ecologists from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) have proposed a method to assess the consequences of climate change on biodiversity. The results, published today in Methods in Ecology and Evolution , have been successfully tested on an Iberian amphibian, the San Antón frog ( Hyla molleri ).

Team creates new tool to verify the geographical origins of virgin olive oil
Team creates new tool to verify the geographical origins of virgin olive oil
Olive oil is one of the most prestigious agri-foods in Spain and it is the base of the Mediterranean diet. This is why adulteration and commercial fraud cases occur when it comes to the origin and varieties of a product with such an economic and business interest. Now, a team from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences and the Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety Research ( INSA ) of the University of Barcelona presents a new authentication tool to check the geographical origin of virgin olive oil as a control on the quality, tradition and product linked to the territory.

A mobile application will compare archaeological materials through their chemical composition
A mobile application will compare archaeological materials through their chemical composition
A study led by María Luisa Cervera, Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Valencia (UV), concludes that smartphones are a potential tool for comparing archaeological samples. The work has been developed through the ArchaeChemis Research Unit of the institution, in which Gianni Gallello, a researcher from the Department of Prehistory, Archaeology and Ancient History, collaborates, and for the first time the smartphone is considered as a key tool to study vestiges from the past.

A method to optimise the operation of solar thermal power plants has been patented
Researchers from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) have patented a method which makes it possible to reduce energy losses in solar thermal power plants. Solar thermal energy relies on harnessing solar radiation to produce heat. As with most methods of obtaining electricity, this heat is used to heat a high-pressure fluid, which drives a turbine connected to a generator.

The interface, a concept to rethink the world in the wake of the pandemic
A new UPF study analyses computer games as if they were an interface, studying all the actors in the game and their interactions. The authors affirm that this methodology can be applied to transform the relationships and processes of many activities and structures of the human being. As part of an international project, a team from UPF analysed adolescents- experience of online games as if they were an interface, with the aim of discovering the use that young people make of the media and how they learn from them.

A new digital gap in internet usage between rich and poor people has been detected
Social networks are used more often in poor neighbourhoods than in affluent neighbourhoods, while the latter tend to consume more information from traditional online media. This is one of the conclusions of a scientific study undertaken by researchers at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), the IMDEA Networks Institute, and Orange Innovation which analyses the relationship between internet usage and variables such as education, income, or inequality in a specific area.

New gene-writing technology to obtain more effective and safe therapies developed
The technology has been developed by researchers from the Translational Synthetic Biology Laboratory at UPF led by Dr. Marc Güell. Find Cut-and-Transfer (FiCAT) is a tool capable of accurately writing small and large genes.

A new tool manages to identify the precise anatomical location of ventricular arrhythmias
Researchers from the BCN Medtech Research Unit have participated in its development, which will facilitate interventional treatment of ventricular tachycardias through safer, more efficient procedures. A multidisciplinary team of researchers and physicians has developed a new commercial tool that is able to identify the exact location of ventricular arrhythmias prior to an ablation procedure.

What will the future of UAV cellular communications be?
A study by Giovanni Geraci and Ángel Lozano, members of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, together with researchers from the universities of New York, North Carolina State (USA), Luxembourg, and Paris- Saclay, and Huawei Technologies. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), also commonly known as drones, are self-piloting or remotely controlled apparatuses.

Climate change ravages coralligenous architects in the Mediterranean
Climate change ravages coralligenous architects in the Mediterranean
Recerca Marine heatwaves are dramatically affecting the marine ecosystems of the world and the Mediterranean is no exception. In the Mediterranean, these extreme climate episodes and its resulting massive mortality of species are getting more and more intense and frequent. To date, most of the studies analysed the effects of these perturbations on specific species and populations, although researchers still do not know how this affects the functioning of the involved ecosystems.
