Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence--a seal that was awarded in 2011.

The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.

IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the "Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya" (CERCA).

Your Role & Our Team

IRB Barcelona is seeking a highly motivated and talented Senior Software Engineer to support the cutting edge research line of the Biomedical Genomics Lab led by Nuria Lopez-Bigas.

The position involves contributing to the technical design and assessment of resources needed to develop innovative bioinformatics tools and projects. The successful candidate will give support to the technical needs for the bioinformaticians and researchers in the development of pipelines and web front-end and back-end functionalities.

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Proven experience in Software Engineering in Cancer Genomics environments.
  • Proven experience in bioinformatic software development and/or front/back-end web development.
  • Excellent analytical skills, creativity, and a team-oriented mindset.
  • A proactive and enthusiastic approach to research challenges.


This position is co-financed by the Research Project: Discovering the molecular signatures of cancer PROMotion to INform prevENTion, funded by the Cancer Research UK & the NIH (CGCATF-2021/100008).

Key responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, execution, and analysis of experiments under the guidance of the principal investigator or senior researchers.
  • Develop and optimize experimental protocols and methodologies.
  • Contribute to data collection, analysis, and interpretation of research results.
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Implement advanced laboratory techniques and procedures relevant to the research area.
  • Train and support junior lab members and students in technical procedures and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of experimental procedures and results.
  • Utilize statistical and bioinformatics tools for data analysis and visualization.
  • Assist in the preparation of research publications, presentations, and reports.
  • Supervise and mentor lab staff, technicians and assistants, may include Predoctoral Researchers.
  • Coordinate specific research projects, ensuring alignment with overall lab objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal and external research partners on joint projects.
  • Manage project timelines, resources, and deliverables effectively.
  • Ensure adherence to laboratory safety protocols and institutional guidelines.
  • Assist in developing and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Participate in safety audits and contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Contribute to the preparation of grant applications and progress reports.
  • Assist in managing budgets and resources related to specific research projects.
  • Stay informed about new funding opportunities relevant to the research focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENTITLEMENTS:

  • Working conditions: : Permanent Contract (científico-técnico) linked to the project "Discovering the molecular signatures of cancer PROMotion to INform prevENTion, funded by the Cancer Research UK & the NIH (CGCATF-2021/100008)". Employed in compliance with Spanish legislation and regulations under a part-time contract.
