About the FHSE

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social sciences and educational sciences. Scholars from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with disciplinary approaches, a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The Faculty’s research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers seven Bachelor’s and twenty Master’s degrees and hosts a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future careers.

The Department of Education & Social Work within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Science is seeking a leading academic to join its team as Associate Professor of Educational Testing.

Description

The successful candidate will develop and maintain research and transfer activities--with national embedding and of (inter)national relevance--explicitly focusing on educational testing and large-scale assessment in technology-rich multilingual learning environments.

Responsibilities include leading the Luxembourg Centre for Educational Testing (LUCET) and its structural research and transfer projects, including the Luxembourg school monitoring programme (Épreuves Standardisées; ÉpStan) and the related longitudinal database.

The role involves promoting scientific outreach and transfer activities and evidence-based decision-making in the Luxembourg education system, exercising leadership internally and externally both in their field of knowledge and, as a leading educationist, apply their general knowledge and skills as a researcher and scholar, and enhancing the Faculty’s teaching and learning programmes in Education.

The holder of the position will also supervise and mentor Bachelor and Master students as well as, doctoral, and post-doctoral researchers, contributing to the development of doctoral education and training, and undertake leadership roles to strengthen the Faculty’s position as a leading European multicultural and multilingual site of research and teaching in the field of educational and social sciences.

Teaching areas

The holder is expected to develop and sustain the scale and quality of teaching and learning in the full range of the Faculty’s study programmes in Education. The holder of the position will design and deliver Bachelor and Master level classes in educational and psychological testing/assessment/diagnostics, and/or related fields, including:
  • the "Theories 3: Diagnostics and Assessment" course in the new Master en Sciences de l’éducation - Éducation inclusive et accessibilité pédagogique, and possibly including
  • the "Theories 3: Quality Assurance and Development in Educational Systems" course in the new Master en Sciences de l’éducation - Gestion et développement des écoles

The holder will undertake tutoring and internship supervision of Bachelor and Master students.

Requirements

  • PhD in educational sciences or psychology (a multi/interdisciplinary research profile is welcome)
  • A minimum of five years of postdoctoral experience acquired in a university or comparable research centre
  • A convincing research and transfer record in educational and social sciences
  • Proven management and leadership experience (formal management training is considered an advantage)
  • Proven ability to acquire research funds and conduct cross-national research projects
  • Proven ability to conduct mission-oriented research and transfer projects
  • Expertise in both educational testing and large-scale assessment (experience with school monitoring and/or SEN diagnostics is considered an advantage)
  • Expertise in (multivariate) statistics and quantitative research methods
  • Expertise in digital/online assessment and testing (experience with ICT development and/or management is considered an advantage)
  • Demonstrable experience with (high-level) public outreach and systematic knowledge transfer (formal communication training is considered an advantage)
  • Good understanding of Luxembourg’s multilingual educational system and its actors
  • Willingness to engage in teamwork in teaching and research groups; and
  • Ability to work autonomously

Language requirements

The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in German, French and English. For this position, knowledge of Luxembourgish is highly desirable. The University encourages its staff to learn languages and provides access to language courses to this end.
